The best thing about week 16 is that the weather has finally cooled off. When you live in Texas, half of September is still just August that won't turn loose. But this week, August let go and we don't have to face it for another year. This is welcome news to all the pregnant ladies. Besides, do you know how torturous it is to look at all your pumpkin recipes and fall porches when we're still sucking on popsicles and playing in the water hose?
I had my first midwife appointment last week and heard the precious sound of my baby's heart beating for the first time. It always makes me nervous when they have to look for a long time to find the heart beat, but since I was already 15 weeks when I went, the midwife was able to locate it quickly. Glory to God!
We toured the birth center in more detail and got to know some of the other staff members a bit better. I found out that one of my last prenatal appointments will be with the OB who is overseeing my case, as a double safeguard since I will (Lord willing) be having a VBAC.
My new midwife and I talked about weight gain. She explained that she would like me to gain less than 25lbs during this pregnancy. Great googily-moogily! Once I stopped guffawing and grabbed a Kleenex for the tears of laughter rolling out of my eyes, I told her that was simply not a possibility, and that my goal was 40lbs. I think she is used to dealing with rebellious pregnant women.
Speaking of weight, I have gained 5 lbs. now. We've celebrated two birthdays in the last six days and there is cake after all. And left over cake. On a normal day I am still eating a low carbohydrate and high protein diet. My energy level is much the same as when I am not pregnant.
People are starting to stare when I go to the store. Then again people always stare at us in public. They used to stare because we had so many little ones (how dare you continue to reproduce when you clearly have one child of each gender?!). A few years later they stared because they were trying to figure out if I was the mom to all of the children or if some belonged to my daughters (a reflection of the wicked and backward society we live in). Now they stare even if I'm all alone. I always check my shoes to make sure no toilet paper is hanging off, so I'm assuming it is simply because I'm pregnant and have crow's feet.
What Baby is Doing This Week:
- Baby is 4-5 inches long. The size of an avocado.
- About 4 ounces in weight--In the next few weeks his weight will double!
- How precious and amazing is this? He's starting to grow toenails.
I just realized that I used the pronoun "he." I sorta have a hunch it's a boy. Then again, my hunches have been wrong before.
We have decided to have a sonogram to determine the gender, but it won't be until November. In the past I have had sonograms earlier on, but I like to wait longer to make really sure. I mean, if you're going to spoil the surprise, you should spoil it right, right? With my 6th baby I had a sono at 18 weeks and I was told he was a girl...he was NOT. Live and learn.
Have a great weekend, friends. And happy gestating to all you expectant moms!
What about you...do you ever have a hunch what the sex of your baby is? And are you usually correct?
